The European Union FP7/ITN network "Black Hole Universe" is pleased to announce for mid-2009 a 2-week Summer school in Paris, France, entitled "First Summer School on Multiwavelength Astronomy".

Scientific rationale

Our current understanding of accretion onto black holes and neutrons stars has greatly evolved in the past 20 years, thanks in large part to the large amount of scientific data available at all wavelengths.

In the high energy range (X- and gamma-ray) these advanced have been made possible by satellites such as XMM-Newton, Chandra, INTEGRAL, RXTE, Swift, and Suzaku, while new missions, like the Fermi Gamma-Ray Observatory, promise new discoveries.  The same is true for radio astronomy with many discoveries from the existing world-leading radio-astronomical observatories such the ATCA, the VLA, the VLBA, the EVN, and MERLIN, with a range of major planned upgrades to these facilities, plus additional facilities planned and under construction.

Clearly, given these developments, the need for more researchers to exploit the enormous volume of available and upcoming scientific data, both by analyzing these data and interpreting them, is pressing.  In this context, we announce an international summer school to provide young researchers the necessary expertise/skill to independently conduct data-analysis relating to high energies and radio astrophysics

The school will focus on X-ray/Gamma-ray and radio data analysis, with one week for each topic. The program will cover a mixture of practical hands-on data analysis sessions (using, for example, AIPS, Miriad, HEADAS, CIAO and XMM-SAS), and will also include some science talks and complementary skills training.  Priority will be given to hands-on sessions of data-analysis.  See http://www.black-hole.eu/mwschool for additional informations on the programs of the school.

Expected lecturers includes :   K. Blundell (UK), G. Hermann (D), C. Lang (USA),  F. Lebrun (F),   F. Longo (I), J. Lee (USA, tentative), C. Motch (F.), M. Nowak (USA),  Z. Paragi (Nl), E. Ros (D/Sp),  A. Siemiginowska (USA), M. van der Klis (Nl).

The audience targeted by the school is primarily PhD students, and possibly post-docs.  We have chosen a 2-week duration to allow a wide coverage of the scientific topics, as well as ample time for discussions and practice.

Venue and accommodation

The school will be held at the "Halle aux Farines"  building in the Paris Diderot University, that is located in the renovated area close  to the Bibliotheque
Nationale de France along the Seine river in Paris.

Financial support and registration rules

Financial support will be provided for a limited number of PhD students who plan to come for the full duration of the program.  Grant recipients will be chosen on the basis of an application.  Interested parties should send a pdf CV, a letter of motivation and one or two letter of recommendation to the organisers:  This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .  We anticipate being able to offer about ten grants.  Support will be in the form of accommodation, and/or a per diem for food. In all cases, participants will have to pay the registration fee. Travel support may be supported under exceptional circumstances.

Deadline for grant applications and registration is  2009 March 15

Registration fees in cash amount to 200 €; no refund is possible in case of partial attendance. These fees must be paid in cash upon arrival.

The number of participants is limited to 30 students/post-doc in order to facilitate the hands-on sessions that are a significant part of the school.

Applications should be made by filling the form below, and sending it by e-mail to:  This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it
